If active people cannot do the physical activities they love to do because of pain or a bone and joint injury, they often undergo surgery. How soon after that surgery can they return to those sports or exercise? In this Ask Dr. Geier video, I discuss that question with a popular sport – golf.

Please note: I don’t respond to questions and requests for specific medical advice left in the comments to my videos. I receive too many to keep up (several hundred per week), and legally I can’t offer specific medical advice to people who aren’t my patients (see below). If you want to ask a question about a specific injury you have, leave it in the comments below, and I might answer it in an upcoming Ask Dr. Geier video. Realistically, after having full right-side hip replacement and recovering fairly quickly, when can I expect to return to playing golf?
There are several factors that influence the return to golf after hip replacement surgery. The patient must recover motion and strength enough to do it comfortably. Physical therapy can help restore motion and strength after surgery.
The patient might not be able to walk long distances, so the surgeon might suggest he ride in a golf cart instead of walking the course.
And the patient might have to get used to the twisting motion, which might not feel normal for a while after the surgery.
In this video, I share my thoughts about the length of time after hip replacement surgery that many joint replacement surgeons allow their patients to play golf.
